Face + Violence = COLORS
July 30th, 2009I really got into this magazine named COLORS about a year and a half ago when coming back from a 4 month study abroad program. It's Italian produced, and distributed all around the world in many languages. COLORS is owned by the clothing company, United Colors of Benetton, and was founded by the graphic designer, Tibor Kalman, in 1991. Since then, they've produced 77 issues and have put together some extremely provocative, influential and controversial pieces of work.
Recently, COLORS also began producing notebooks that were filled with drawings and submissions by their readers. COLORS Magazine itself is a collaborative effort from designers, photographers, writers, children, vending machine repairmen, soldiers and immigrants from around the world. These new publications by COLORS are just as bold as the original concept of the Italian magazine, but features work explicitly dedicated to the freedom of speech and expression. With two volumes so far, Faces and Violence, the notebooks hold true to their mission.
Check out some of the work below that are featured in Faces and Violence respectively. If you're interested, I highly, highly recommend picking up the newest issue of COLORS, as well as their notebooks. It's well worth the search.

Five Stellar Decisions
July 25th, 2009The PEN Story from PENStory on Vimeo.
Not only is this a cool stop motion video with a great concept, but it definitely gets you thinking. What are your top 5 Stellar Life Decisions?
Feel free to comment with your list.
It's time we hear from you.
July 23rd, 2009I figured that since I had been posting my drawings a lot lately, I'd take sometime to shine the spotlight on someone else for a blog. This is a few pieces done by a friend and co-worker of mine Named Sarah. She's from the Bronx and went to school at the Pratt Institute.
I think her art has a great sense of what its like to be in the city, maybe not as much with the content of what she's drawing but how she draws it. Whether its the color choices, and way she draws her lines and shades her images, all of them have subtle hints of the graffiti scrawled on subways or walls. The coloring has the feel of fresh spray paint (especially the George Bush one) and I really love the hints of bright vibrant colors in the mad cow drawing.
Looking through the Draw blogs, I've really started to see that as much as we highlight different sketchbooks, we've barely scratched the surface of the variety that comes with each persons book. Its not that a person is "classically," trained or not that really matters because, yeah, their work can have a better perspective in it. They may know how to draw proportions or know what cross hatching is or list off all the most famous artistic styles, but none of that really matters.
What matters is what you do with all of that, so if you compare Sarah's work here to mine, some may say her's is better...looks more professional, but at the end of the day thats not the point. The point is that you get a feel of WHO the person doing the drawing is, not how they draw it. You can get a lot of things from Sarah's stylistic choices, just like you can get a good sense of my humor or personality through my drawings.
I want you guys to start sending stuff in (and yes...for the purpose of this blog, you can email it) and I'm going to start posting every drawing I get. We want to get to know you guys, we want to be able to start seeing who you are through not only how and what you draw, but also what your drawing says about you. Attach a little about yourself if you'd like, or maybe a little about what your drawing means to you. Hell, you can just send me a drawing and let use try to figure it out ourselves.
Don't be shy.
And now that you've read all that jazz, here's one of our newest friends and a wonderful artist, Sarah.

Sketchbook out the wazoo
July 21st, 2009So here are a few pages from my sketch book. I'm sorry I've been lagging, but things have really turned up for Draw in a big big way. There's going to be a few really awesome posts and announcements in the next few weeks (I'll write a pretty awesome blog by the end of the week I swear to God) but for now, here's some more shit-tastic drawings(and if you guys didn't know...shit-tastic means really really awesome)

NYC/SKETCH
July 7th, 2009So here are some shots of the summer....and yeah, you know it's summer in NYC when you see Mr.Softie.

and here's my sketchbook drawing...
Yeah it's vulgar and kinda weird, but oh well.

Here's a new drawing. Sorry for the delay, we've been busy the past few days here at Draw ltd. So his name is Connon, and he's the evil twin of someone's favorite cuddle buddy, Carter.

and here's a shot from one of our many walk-a-bouts through the city. We'll be putting these up from now on so you guys who don't live in NYC can see/get inspired by what we are.
